"Plea for Mercy"

1995, oil on canvas - 30x40"

Several things are expressed in this work. Much of the time, I find myself feeling as though I am in a grave, being buried alive, not quit dead, but about to be killed. I am pleading with God for life. Help me to live before I die. Death (the blackness behind me) is about to over take me and I feel powerless to stop it. I have been bound (the ropes) by pain and fear for so long, as I am pleading with God, I fail to notice the ropes that have been so tight most of my life, are now loose.

I see something else in this painting, an offering, and the offering is the bondage that has kept me a prisoner…Sin. But when Jesus Christ suffered and died to pay the price for all my sins, my sins were forgiven and the ropes of sin that held me captive were cut when I accepted His sacrifice.
